Troll Charms
Writing a longer novel..?
To write a longer novel, do you need longer chapters? And to make longer chapters, do you add other things AND the major part of the chapter? Like JK Rowling does. In her chapter Halloween, she adds the quidditch part, the charms lesson part, AND then finally, the halloween troll part. So, is this a good way of making longer chapters, and eventually writing a longer book???
There is a very fundamental mechanical aspect of novels which is different from short stories. I believe, honestly, that any novel could be a short story (maybe not a good one, but a short story nonetheless).
In my true and honest opinion, short stories, good ones, are much harder to write than novels. Novels take more time, and a lot more work. But with short stories, you have to focus and hone on only the very essential aspects of your story, the very essential details, the very essential scene(s) that show the biggest change, the most compelling plot, etc.
You have to say it quick and you have to say it right. In novels, you can stroll through a scene, give it ten, twenty, or more pages. Stop for a minute, watch a specific event, sit down and enjoy it, focus on and exhaust details. Get up when you're tired of it (and when you think everyone else'll be tired of it, too) and walk into the next scene, the next chapter, etc.
In a short story, you have 20 pages to get to the finish line (sorry for the cliche) and you can't run, but you can't walk, and you have to sort of power-walk, jog, slow down at the really important spots, then speed up past the less important things, slow down again, etc.
Anyone can write a book, and anyone can write a short story. But each is its own style and art and each requires a deep mastery of mechanical understanding, passion and skill.
In both, however, understanding of pace and scene and all the other elements of literature serve to make your stories great.

Which do you like better, the new Troll beads or Pandora?
I started a Pandora for my daughter which I love, but now the Trolls are so colorful! I think the silver Pandora will be a lot more versitile once it's filled and she gets older. They're not cheap, either, and I can't believe the gold charms start at $200! Have a great day all!
